What is a Rogowski Coil?

Rogowski coils are air-cored coils placed around a conductor in a toroidal fashion. The magnetic field produced by the AC current induces a voltage in the coil proportional to the rate of change of current. This voltage is integrated to produce an output proportional to the current.

Unlike traditional current transformers, they have no iron core, meaning there is no saturation. This allows for accurate measurement of AC components even with large superimposed DC components, making them ideal for ripple current measurement in battery systems.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the measurement range of the NRC Rogowski coil?
The NRC Rogowski coil offers a wide dynamic range with high linearity from 1A up to 100kA AC.
Is this sensor suitable for harsh environments?
Yes, it features an IP67 rating and is made from flame-retardant thermoplastic rubber (UL 94 V-0), with an operating temperature range of -30ºC to 80ºC.
Does it require an external power supply?
The coil itself is non-intrusive and draws no power from the main circuit. However, it must be connected to an electronic integrator for phase shift compensation and frequency equalization.
What is the accuracy of the NRC series?
When calibrated, the read accuracy is <0.5% at the central position (25ºC). The linearity is ±0.2% of the reading.
Can the coil be used on awkward shaped conductors?
Absolutely. The flexible Ø8 coil design is specifically intended for use with large or awkward shaped conductors or in places with limited access where traditional CTs cannot fit.
Is there any danger if the secondary circuit is opened?
No, unlike traditional current transformers, there is no danger from open-circuited secondaries with Rogowski coils, and they cannot be damaged by large overloads.
